A piece of history of IJmuiden

IJmuiden’s origins date back to 1876 when the North Sea Canal was opened.

IJmuiden

The IJ and Wijkermeer were reclaimed for this purpose. Many canal workers continued to live here and were the first inhabitants. The new location was christened IJmuiden by King Willem III: estuary of the IJ.

The place developed rapidly through fishing and shipping. You will encounter many memories along the way.
