Last Friday, the time had come: the official kickoff of the anniversary edition of the Vissenloop & Vissenloop Run. At a unique location, the Forteiland (Fortress Island), the board, volunteers, and invited guests gathered to kick off what already feels like the most unique edition ever. Not only because this is the tenth edition, but also because this year’s Vissenloop coincides with the 150th anniversary of IJmuiden and the North Sea Canal.

During the kickoff, the first raffle ticket bearing the special number 1876 was presented by chairman Fred van Dam to Mayor Frank Dales (photo: Belinda Put, FishEye Events). This immediately demonstrated how this anniversary edition will have an extra historical touch. Mayor Dales explained that he participates with a municipal team every year, although sometimes with somewhat mixed feelings. He also reflected on the moment in 2024 when participants finished soaking wet to the skin (if they hadn’t already stopped along the way). At the same time, he expressed his appreciation for all the volunteers: “Volunteering is part of a community and contributes to society. Parents should instill that in their children.” And looking ahead to this year with a big smile: “This year, all records will be broken!”

Chairman Fred van Dam emphasized during the kickoff that the Vissenloop is an event for and by the community. He also enthusiastically spoke about this year’s additions: “With the Vissenloop Run, we’re going to restore the old Pierloop to its former glory. We’ve also added a run for toddlers and preschoolers.”

Besides its sporty and festive atmosphere, the goal of the Vissenloop remains unchanged: to raise as much money as possible for the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF). Everyone knows someone who has (had) cancer, whether close to home or further afield. That’s precisely why research remains crucial. For better treatments, higher survival rates, and ultimately, the hope that cancer can increasingly be prevented or cured. Therefore, the proceeds from the run, and this year for the first time, the run itself, will once again go entirely to the Dutch Cancer Society.

This official launch marks the start of an edition that is already generating a tremendous amount of energy. One thing is certain: this will be an anniversary event not to be missed. So register quickly.
